CHAPTER ELEVEN

Descending the main staircase, that old familiar feeling of unreality hit me. The entrance hall, gleaming in the light of its huge crystal chandelier, the alcoved statuary, the antique furniture, all suddenly seemed so absurdly opulent I found it impossible to believe it was for real and not a film set, and that I was actually living in the house as a guest and not merely passing through on a guided tour.

What would me mum say?

As is wont to happen to me at such moments, fantasy took over with a rush. Suddenly I was Rex Harrison in The Yellow Rolls Royce...Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind.

‘Frankly, my dear...’ I addressed Scarlet, who was standing at the foot of the stairs, ‘I don’t give a damn. If I want to slide down the bannisters naked, I’ll slide down the bannisters naked. ’

Drawn by its chatter and happy laughter, I entered the room with the bar, glad then that I’d put on a suit. Though no directives had been issued, a sense of occasion had motivated the others to make a sartorial effort and they did indeed look rather splendid - particularly the girls.

Say what you will about the merit of jeans and semi-see-through blouses, a clingy, silky, full-length evening dress has got ’em beaten all ends up for downright sexiness - particularly when worn over nothing but skin.

Millie Zilchik was there, looking positively ravishing in a simple cafe-au-lait satin creation that looked as though it had been sprayed on. Virginia Tempest had poured herself into a jade green sensation, the back of which plunged almost to her bum. Julie Kahn looked utterly delightful in a flimsy organza gown of abstract design. And Fiona Franklin stopped me dead in my tracks in a

figure-hugging sheath of brown-and-white swirls.

She spotted me and waved me over.

As I made my way across the room, Julie looked me up and down and made a complimentary grimace, Millie puckered up and blew me a kiss, and Virginia playfully stuck her tongue out.

As I drew up to Fiona I went into a stagger, clutched my heart with one hand and covered my eyes with the other. ‘Dammit, Fiona, don’t do this to me! How dare you look this beautiful!’

She laughed gaily. ‘You adorable ham.’

‘You think I’m kidding? You don’t think you could give a guy a heart attack? Feel this...’ I took her hand to my breast.

‘Go on with you, you’ve just run down the stairs. ’

‘Hey...you look terrific.’

‘Thank you, sir,’ she curtsied. ‘You look pretty sensational yourself. ’

The barman came up and I ordered a vodka tonic.

‘An august assembly,’ I remarked, gazing around. ‘Do you know many of them, Fiona?’

‘Not many. They seem a pretty nice bunch. That’s the fun of these week-ends, finding out about people. ’

‘You really enjoy them, don’t you?’

‘The week-ends?’ She gave me a wink. ‘You bet. You will, too.’

‘I already am.’

Mat came over and had a word with us, then moved on. I talked to Fiona about this and that, then the dinner gong sounded and we made our way across the hall to the dining room.
